George Sandy papers on the Congress of California Seniors, 1981-1996.

Collection contains notes, programs, publicity materials, letters, photographs, and miscellaneous items relating to George and Mary Sandy's involvement in the Congress of California Seniors from 1981-1996. Most of the collection documents specific events such as the Congress' annual conventions, political rallies, fund raisers, award ceremonies, and other functions, including Sandy's 80th and 85th birthday parties which were CCS fundraisers. Other items include a small amount of correspondence, news clippings, and copies of publications relating to senior citizens. Some material relates to national senior citizen organizations.

George Sandy was born in 1907 in Indiana, became an organizer for the Young Communist League in Southern California in the 1930's, went to New York as an organizer for the League in the 1940's, returned to California and worked with the Communist Party for most of his career until 1968, and ran for Congress in California and New York as a communist. Sandy later became active in the senior movement and was president of the Congress of California Seniors. From the description of George...
